Scott Schuman - The Sartorialist

When I decided to start my own blog.....I really didn't know much about much.  A good friend of mine gave me a Cole's Notes rundown of the important stuff.  Now, over 200 posts later - I still don't know much - but I know more than I did.  One of the inspirations/motivations for me to start The Covetist was The Sartorialist aka Scott Schuman's work as a photographer and the slivers of insight he allows his readers into himself.  His photographs are absolutely stunning.  No one can deny that.  But, what drew me to read every single one of his posts was one post in particular he wrote about losing his father.  He appears to be so guarded and kind of an elitist.  But, that's what draws me to him and his work.  His attention to detail.  His eye un-jaded by influence.  He shamelessly covets what he has always coveted.  Luxury.  True style.  History in the form of clothing.  But all of these things he seeks; gilded, paramountly by the ethos that is him and his work.  Now, I don't know him personally, but this is what I have deduced about his character.  His girlfriend, Garance Doré (who is wickedly talented and stunning in her own right), falls into this mysterious but intentional path he has carved out for himself and ultimately changed the landscape of street fashion photography.  And, for an extended moment that is turning into more than a moment, has injected decadent truth and life into pop culture.  In a time when fast everything is everywhere.  He preaches loyalty, taste and old school rituals through his art and words.

Yesterday, there was an article written about a controversial interview with Scott Schuman done by The Talks.  I see why people are getting offended by what Scott is saying (pointedly, about Tavi Gavinson).....but you know what, regardless, he still be what he is - you can't fight city hall.

Jean Paul Gaultier - The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts - September 21st, 2011

To say that this exhibition was stunning, is an understatement.  From the animated faces on the mannequins as the first showcase to the exquisite lighting and pieces chosen.  There were SO MANY people there.  But I was still swept away by the materials used, color palettes, fabrics and the myriad of projects that JPG has been involved with.  His influence is undeniable.  His inspiration is obvious......if you are listening.  Pop culture, religion and sex, sex, sex.  Moreover, he pushes the boundaries in a gentle but slightly uncomfortable way.  It's intoxicating.  I could have absorbed another 60 pieces.  I felt gluttonous.  But humility and grace won me over in the end.
